D14A1 Dual Carb Vtec?

Post by Colin_D13B »

Have a D14A1 here and would like to make it vtec using a D16 vtec head
I have seen this done on a 1.5 dual carb
What would i need for the swap
Would it be similar to the D14A3?

Thanks In Advance

first of all, you must see the head gasket are the same if same d14a1 with d16 then you can do the conversion.
But then you have to put the injection of d16 vtec (harness, injectors, manifold etc)

d14a1 has the sparks opposite to d series eg/ek versions i think. So you cannot swap valvetrains from these engines.
Still there is d16y3 from mb1 civics, if there is a vtec version of it which i doubt then you can take it'ts head

The opposite of sparks don't matter but the head gasket if the same.

Hmmm..
What engine was this originally produced in?? ^ ^ ^
I ask this because its multipoint injection?
All D14's over here are either single point injection or dual carb?

First of all this might become a very nice topic with the carbs.

To clarify: the old D14's (A1 and perhaps A2?) were carbed.

The newer one, A3/A4/Z1/etc... are all injections.

Now there lies a problem, for injection you need the high pressure fuel system that carbs do not have. Meaning, swapping out the entire fuel lines section is needed when converting. Can be done, but troublesome and perhaps not worth the trouble. Converting to VTEC afterwards will be possible (yes swap head, cam systems are not available in VTEC for this head to my knowledge)... but better start out with an chassis having injection already would be my advise.

Now the real cool thing IMHO would be to get the carbs and VTEC working. Indeed only change the heads and let the carbs still do their work. Then somehow make a switch putting up VTEC above a certain rpm, you need to be a little handy with electronics yourself for that (I can not do such stuff btw.) And for the rest tune the carbs to put in the fuel you need.

I have no idea how well this would work and how tricky it is (btw is the head on top of old-style pistons not such a good thing, D15B2 mini-me has this problem as well), but it would be really cool. But you need someone who can handle carbs and knows what is possible with them. I for sure don't know shit about them.

Wow! Interesting but how works vtec in this situation.
How it can switch on?

The solonoid is wired to a Buddyclub V-Con (Vtec Controller)
The same principal can be added to a rev counter with a shift light
The counter lets you adjust where you want the light to come on so the solonoid can be wired to that

Heres a video of the above engine before dyno tuned
