a/c bearing going bad

Post by saxophonias »

my problem goes like this. This is the 3rd time i have replaced the outer bearing of the a/c tensioner. It makes noise so at first i thought it is just a worn bearing. But this has happened again and again, so i am thinking maybe the tensioner is bad and wears the bearing. I have found another used tensioner and i am going to see if i solve the problem by swapping it. Anyone with similar a problem?

Yup... its the No. 1 reason I don't like A/C. I put a perfectly good one from one Civic to another... bearing noise... and another time the bearing just started to panic all of a sudden. Without actually having the A/C working in the car, just the freakin belt was still in place.

so is it something typical? i got a used tensioner from another civic to see how it goes. i dislike similar noises in my car
could the bearing collapse and cut the belt?

I the past I had A/C tensioner bearing noise too.
But I changed the bearing and untill now it is working noiseless.
I think the tip is not to over-tighten the A/C belt

this might be true. And the sad thing is that here noone uses the right tool so as to tighten it with the suggested power as the manual says..

we changed the bearing but the noise was there again. We poured some special oil to the a/c pulley and all of a sudden the noise was gone. My mechanic says that it won't be like that for long as the lubricant is going to be gone from there in time. His estimation is that the noise comes from the a/c belt, which although being new (only one month old) maybe it doesn't fit 100% and this minor difference makes the noise. This has happened in other cars before as he told me. He also mentioned that the oem belts usually have an upper layer (which is of different material) meant for better grip on the pulley and thus reducing the possibility of creating noises of such kind. Let's hope he is right. The cost of the original mitsuboshi belt is 30euros :o :o from honda.

I have A/C belt from brand Continental.
No annoying noise at all
Try if you want this brand it costs around 10 Euros

The noise comes when the car work at idle with A/C on.
Or the noise is always there? Or what else?

Please post video from the car when the car works with the A/C on and off at idle and then with some revs like 2500-3000 rpms.
Maybe it is something else? And noise just coming from there.

the noise was absent at idle. Then it was stronger while the revs were rising. It was a typical bearing noise (like twit twit twit   ) After 15 minutes of driving it was almost absent. If i switched the a/c on it kept going. Since it went away with spraying a bit of lubricant to the a/c pulley i guess it was a belt thing. Now it is noise free, for the time being at least. I am going to see how it will perform the following days

Something interesting:
The A/C idle pulley that the D-series 96-00 Civics it is been replaced.
The old part number for the OEM pulley was 38942-P01-003
and the new that giving Honda is 38950-P2K-305.
Maybe there is real issue with this faulty? pulley.
Here is the Honda Service Bulletin about this issue
http://www.hondalac.com/service/Bulletins/x00-003e.pdf

I think that's why Honda gives new part number for the pulley.
From year 2000 all D-series have this new pulley.

Here is the new design pulley with additional 2 washers-maybe for the dirts/water- that old one doesn't have
