RUST

What does everyone do to deal with rust? Both prevention and cure, our cars are famous for rust problems, in particular sills and arches. I myself have a spot of corrosion on my arch which I need to deal with before winter.

Now I was thinking I would get some sandpaper and rub down to bare metal, and then apply some paint to stop it coming back. Obviously it would be nice to have paint the same colour but who knows how you would source that, anyone know?

What do people think of this plan?

I would suggest to do it in summers and just survive the winter,

Just close the rust hole with paste because even if u sand it .. Its gona come back.
Unless u really use a gas and fire end to melt and cut all the rust out and scrap a new metal on.
Well rust is rust ad especially in winter its gona be hard to work on bcoz its damp and cold and causes condensation.
U need summer hotness when everything is dry and then u can see and act clearly,

Else wise just leave it now - dont worry abt it.

It's hard to just sit by while something gets worse and worse though! Need a garage!

it all depends on the amount of rust it has. If there are holes then I doubt you could do it properly as it would require welding. I guess you could find several DIY on you tube. As for the colour matching i guess an expert could find the right match for you. Maybe get the colour in spray form _ready to use_.

Okay so this weekend I had a good look under my car and found areas of rust:

*small spots where paintwork was scratched
*large areas where bumper fixings had broken (due to collisions) so underseal had been removed.
*driver door had rust all along its edge and inside under the painted seal.

I sanded down all these areas (where I could reach) down to bare metal and then painted Hammerite over it. It's black so colour doesnt match but my car is dark blue so its not too bad. Plus I'd rather have a reliable car than a pretty car.

I used a variety of files and an angle grinder with scraping attachment. All in all I'm quite pleased :)

Well it's only reall bad on rear arch but not on the outer panel but rather on a small piece of metal that the bumper attaches too. Not important IMO and not connected properly to arch body panel anyway.

Most of the time, the rust has formed from the inside... Honda should have protected the metal from the inside. Especially if you look in the hole closed of by the tail lights. There rust start often from the inside. Water forms there due to condensation I guess... so closing that part of is not enough.

I am currently repairing it on my EJ9 (uh I removed some rust and am still a bit slow with buying new arches...). Bottomline, I need to replace the metal, sanding down will not work because the source of the rust is still right there on the backside of the metal sheet.

I might have a better look next time but the hard decision is do I pull off the underseal jsut to check...
