Cams for D14

Post by saxophonias »

There are several options here.
First someone could use aftermarket cams for sohc non-vtec engines which however are not so popular and numerous.
Secondly there are several regrinds out there like Delta, Bisimoto etc.
Third but not so hp effective is to use a bigger cam from d15 or d16.

At this topic we are going to analyse the various available options.

Warning: only D-series with the spark plugs on the front can swap cams. The old D15B2 and D15B7 etc. have spark plugs on the back side, indicating a completely different cam layout that does not fit a D14 head.

Dodo some day I asked you if it's good idea to put head from d16y7 on d14 block, and you posted that it could be beter idea to swap only cams. I discussed about this on my local forum, and now there are some project with this two type of setup.
So as I know from those forum is that d16y7 cams and head fit on d14 block with no problem. It didn't give some big results, but you can feel some positive changes.

The head should actually be identical, it is the cam that probably makes all the diff. Curious how this cam actually runs... any dyno's of those?

Bigger engine-->bigger cam, but i am dubious if this cam could produce top end power in comparison with d14 cam. I am very positive about that in a friend's d12 who swapped d15 cam into his EE civic. He noticed gains in low and mid revs but the engine couldn't produce any power in high revs. Stock d12 double carbed engine with no rev limiter can be power productive until 7500++revs with bigger intake exhausts etc. When he swapped the bigger cam, power dropped significantly in high revs. This is quite reasonable as bigger d engines are not so rev happy in comparison to lower displacement ones.
I have also seen many d14 projects which where hp productive up to 7500rpms with stock cam. So actually i would bet on a regrind rather than stock bigger cam.

Have to invite somebody... damn forgot about him. I just ran through my hotmails, but anyway.

Overhere a guy nicked 'Sebastix' was able to reach 130 bhp on stock D14 cam! It was with very well designed ITB's. He is the one I expect to beat me of the 145 bhp benchmark soon. That is because I sold him an OEM D14 cam that is gonna be regrinded...

So, considering the head swap is it better to keep the stock cam from the new head or install a skunk, bisimoto etc one? I mean, i know is probably better an aftermarket one, but considering the difference of the price does it pays itself? Thank you

I guess it all depends on what is your goal. If you are going to rev the engine nearly to 8000rpms with valve springs, retainers and bigger valves, then a bigger stock d-series cam or your stock one will be very restrictive. I think if you are in the limit of 130hp, stock d14 cam is alright.

impressive but are you sure this is a d14? i am saying that because it is very strange to have 160NM of torque and 153hp with 7300rpms rev limiter! Are you sure you are aware of all the engine mods?
