2 stage and 3 stage VTEC engines

Post by archyman »

It would be interesting to collect some info regarding 2 stage and 3 stage Cam-changing VVT (VTEC) on sohc Honda engines. The latter is preferable for combining the best of both worlds - performance and economy.
Please post any info you have about the 3 stage VTEC d series and the differences with 2 stage.

As far as i know from searching the web, the D15b VTEC has the 3 stage setup with 130hp at 7200 and capable of doing 55+ MPG on first phase of the valves!

It turns out that this is the only 3 stage VTEC d series ever made:

D15B 3-Stage VTEC

Found in:
1995–1998 Honda Civic Ferio Vi (EK3, Japanese market)
1999-2000 Honda Civic Vi-RS
Bore and Stroke :75,0×84,5 mm (d14a4 - 75-79)
Displacement : 1,493 cc (91.1 cu in)
Rod Length : 137 mm (d14a4 - 138mm)
Rod/Stroke : 1.62
Compression : 9.3:1 (d14a4 - 9.2:1)
Power : 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) at 7,000 rpm[6]
Torque: 139 Nm at 5,300 rpm
VTEC 12-valve to 16-valve switch over : 3,000 rpm (below such engine speed, the engine is operating in 12-valve mode)
VTEC high cam switch over : 6,000 rpm
Redline : 7,200 rpm (d14a4 - 6800 rpm)
Valvetrain : SOHC, four valves per cylinder
Connecting rod length : 137 mm
Connecting rod big end diameter : 48 mm (d14a4 - 43mm)
Fuel Control : OBD2a (is this the same as in d14a4?)
Head Code : P2J-07
ECU Code: P2J (small case ECU)*** (in d14a4 is p3y)

it would be interesting to know if the head could be changed and 3 stage engaged in d14

Fuel Control : OBD2a (is this the same as in d14a4?)
nop. d14 - is SFI. it's... no obd1 and no obd2... like obd1.5 XD

1 stage
NO VTEC like D14
2 stage
only VTEC or VTEC-E. like D16Z6 or D15Z3
3 stage
VTEC and VTEC-E like d15b JDM or D15Z7 EDM

3 stage my next step in summer 2013, i have cyl.head d15b. what info you want know?

A car that is obd2 confirms only from the diagnostic connector which is OBD2 connector and not from the other connectors that go to ecu.
Many people don't know that all Civic 96-00 have obd2 diagnostic connector.
In some cases it is hidden well !
OBD2 diagnostic connector

In our ej9s the diagnostic obd2 connector is near the clutch pedal at sidewall and well hidden

it is the number G413

In some other civics 96-00 is here

So the ej9s are obd2 car but the connectors in Honda community are calling SFI for easy recognizing.

1 stage
NO VTEC like D14 - actually its 12 valve in that mode so not like d14(vtec-e)
2 stage
only VTEC or VTEC-E. like D16Z6 or D15Z3 - this stage is like d14 semi opened valves
3 stage
VTEC and VTEC-E like d15b JDM or D15Z7 EDM - the valves open fully for power vtec
3 stage my next step in summer 2013, i have cyl.head d15b. what info you want know?
So there is VTEC-E in low rpm, d14 like in the middle and power VTEC at the last ~1000 rpm...right?
I was wondering if such head could be swapped to d14 but found that the D15B is super rare engine and the tuning will be a nightmare.
How did you find such head (cost?) and how would you tune the 3 stage ecu?..Is it a straight forward fit on the d14 block?

Does this mean that the ecus are the same, in above info they say its a "small case ecu (p2j)?
Cheers!

No, the OBD2 connector is for diagnostic purpose. Externally maybe Ecus have same appearance and dimensions but the real difference is the way of settings and working.
Nowadays all car brands have OBD2 connectors for diagnostic and programming purposes. That does not mean they have the same Ecus!
