d16a6 head on d14a3/4 block

Post by unac »

Hello to all,
First I want to apologize for my english (it's not my native language) or if this tread is in the wrong place.
I want to specify that I'm discussing only the sohc non-vtec head's. I've read a lot of threads for d14 with vtec, but I dont want to go with vtecs, because its hard to find z6, y8 head in good shape on fair price, p28 ecus become rare, manifolds too, unleast where I live. Also I think that the non vtec engine have potential.
Recently I get offer for d16a6 engine from Honda Shuttle at very good price
What do you think about this setup: d16a6 head on d14a3/a4 block with p29 pistons?
I've read that this head is one of the best flowing.
Best regards.

Welcome to the board Unac. I don't know about the compression numbers and whether the piston does properly fit this combination, but other than that it sounds a bit like a reversed mini-me. So I guess that should work. And as for the non-VTEC vs VEC discussion, I guess you're right about what to expect. My own engine pulls only 9 hp more with the VTEC engaged, even without VTEC I could get 130 bhp.

Thanks for the reply dodo,
I did some research. The d16a6 head combustion chamber is 38cc, the p29 piston is dome shaped with 7.2cc volume of the dome. With a gasket of d16y8 (2 layers) the compression ratio equal to 10.75:1( by some cr calculator). Also this head is rev limited to 7200RPM.
I think is perfect for d14 but I find nothing written.

I guess the vtec head gives the advantage of driveability below the vtec point. Going non-vtec and still making equal power you will need a more aggressive cam, which should affect drivability in low revs, fuel consumption, emissions etc. ;)

Fun fact, my D14 VTEC has been tuned recently. Due to catalytic converter and slightly less noisy exhaust it only reached 139 bhp... that same day we fully tested the non-VTEC full rpms range as well, it got so close - 133 bhp... so anybody with a non-VTEC D14 can reach 133 bhp to my knowledge and still be drivable and economic.

Neh I meant my Skunk2 D16 VTEC cams, just not engaging the VTEC cam lobes, that gave me a 'non-VTEC' 133 bhp. That was fully tuned to about 7000 rpm for fun. Than fully mapping the VTEC lobes got it to 139 bhp with switchover somewere in the 5000-5500 range, no idea exactly where actually, very subtle sound change. It was just fun to see how each cam lobe could be tuned to their best and that it is possible to run non-VTEC over 130 bhp, and still be driveable apparently.
