d14z4 mini me or fit full d16y8 engine

Post by cad civic mechanic »

Hi guys, just new to the site and looking for some guidance before i start my project. I have a 1999 1.4 civic IS with a D14Z4 engine (this is the engine code stamped on the manufacture plate under the bonnet) I was thinking about putting a d16y8 head on this engine as a mini me swap. After reading on the forums about the swap, i have been put off by the tecnicality of wiring the ecu as i have no idea about what i am doing. Is the over all proceedure the same as the d14a3/a4 engines? Also, i have been offered a 1999 d16y8 full engine with 65000 miles or so on it for £200, would it be quicker, cheaper n easier to fit this engine than to do the mini me swap and what parts will i need to swap the d14z4 for the d16y8 engine

Cheers

Chris

Hey welcome to the forum. Personally I think it'd be best to do a mini-me swap. Fitting the Y8 head, will be easier than fitting the whole engine, not to mention cheaper. To fit the whole engine you will need every sensor etc from the Y8 engine and will still need to do an OBD1 swap to tune it. I dont think the Y8 loom will fit the EJ9 one without modification anyway.

Also the D14A4 is a better engine than the D16Y8. It had a better rod to stroke ratio for safer revving, the Y8 oil pump is also known to be a bit shoddy. depens what your goals are though really. With a good tune and Inlet/Exhuast a D14Y8 can score 140+ HP as proved by Joris. A standard D6Y8 is 125hp...
what are your plans for your car??

1998 BB8 Prelude Motegi VTi
1998, B16A2 EK4 Civic VTi

Aims:
EJ9 - Now my GF's car.
BB8 - Rebuild after crash damage to front end.
EK4 - Daily driver. Strip and track prep once prelude project complete

Hi owen, hows things? Plans... how long do you have lol. Think i will go with the mini me swap. Engine is out atm as the car was stolen and brutally front ended, no chassis or engine damage thank god, it was all cosmetic, bent bumper bar and bonnet but unfortunatly the shock wave disturbed the paint and rust has set in around the engine bay. So engine transmission and all ancillary components removed from bay so as rust can be treated and repainted. Also the engine is completely stripped as the block and sump are getting chrome plated at the momment. Once block etc is back going to start the mini me swap, only problem is I dont have a clue about obd1 swap. I take it my civic has obd2a, is that right? Any who, new oem water and oil pump ordered for the build. Cannot get hold of a D16Z6 or D16Y8 manifold anywere never mind the head so engine build on hold for now. The car has a one off body kit which I fitted and painted my self over the last year after I got it back from the thieving bastards who near killed it.

Plans for next year:
manifold swap, OBD1 swap (when I work out what im doin), D16Y8 head polished and machined, head block and box all chromed, with anodised blue bolts fittings and brackets, uprated clutch and lightened fly wheel, wiring loom braded blue, hoses braded after market fuel rail and regulator, walbro fuel pump, greddy bolt on turbo kit with intercooler, powder coat struts suspension arms and roll bars, after market suspension bushes, four wheel disc conversion kit, coil over suspension and finally customised interior. Its a big list but I will do it, only problem is parts are like hens teeth in n.i, hard to find. P.S how do you upload pics to the forum ? Do you know much about the obd1 swap? What are you running yourself?

Cheers

Chris

Wow they are some plans!! What a bunch of pricks stealing your car!! You do have some dedication though id probably just get a new shell =P

What year is your civic?? The 1996-1998 are OBD2a and 1998-2000 are OBD2b. My understanding is that once youve got the necessary components:
*A OBD1 ECU
*A OBD1 Distributor (im unclear on this one its seems your only need an *OBD1 dizzy if your car is OBD2a. OBD2b work according to joris.
*Inlet manifold D16Y8 or D16Z6 and IACV from the manifold. (You can use other manifolds but some differ slightly (see Law's welcome thread))
*Injectors to suit the ECU, most probably 240cc as the Y8 and Z6 are both 240cc i believe.

Then you need to either make a conversion harness if your good with wires and solder. Or do as im gonna do and buy a conversion harness such as:
http://www.boomslang.us/obd2to1.htm
Although im sure there are more out there...

A lot of people here have done the OBD1 swap so its pretty straightforward but i know what you mean about feelin nervous about it.

Have you been to a scrapyard?? Theres lots of civics in the ones near me so manifolds etc arent to hard to find.

Ive yet to do the OBD1 swap ive got most of the bits but I wanna make sure ive got everything and time in case anything doesnt go as planned hehe :D

So im running stock atm but my plans are:
D16Y8 manifold swap
OBD1 swap
D16Y8 mini-me

Thats probably it for my D14 i want to get an S14 or a Prelude afterwards hehehe ;)

Done a bit of research into this car on the net and with honda specialists, (they wernt much help, was like dealing with MI5) head fuck would be the word for it. The car is a 1999 5 door (same shape as rover 400) it is a 1.4IS d14z4 which was built in the uk. I took out the ecu today and got its id from the following site:

http://www.hondata.com/techecuid.html

On this site you will see 4 ecu types, mine is the second down from the top using one plug on the left and two on the right with a blank socket in the centre which makes it an obd2a ecu. (strange cause thats a 1998 ecu and the car is 1999)

The codes on the ecu are: 37820-P1J-E15 (560640-9517) 53

The distributor is a 9 wire one, it has seven wires on one socket and 2 wires on a second socket which both enter the distributor housing. There are four codes on the distributor which are as follows: 30100 P1K E01
82DCC4
42724A
2199
Is this a obd2b type which joris refers to ?

Next it has a side flow throttle body and inlet manifold with a solenoid valve with two vacc hoses on it, one pipe goes to the exhaust gas purification canister, and the other to a plate between the throttle body and the manifold, the valve its self is bolted to the intake manifold. The valve is stamped by denso. The manifold its self is made from black plastic.

The lambda has 4 wires running to it, two white, one gray and one black, i take it this is a heated lambda joris refers to ?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This realy has me confused me, hope you can shed some light on this one. One theory is that the pevious owner has started a conversion (dizzy) or is this the way the car was built?

Another mini me yoho keep them coming, tell you what, when you get your Prelude il swap you my civic for it !

Sorry for the delay. I reckon the difference is because its a 5 door. 3 doors like mine with have the D14A4 or A3 engine and the P3X or P3Y ECU, and the chassis code is EJ9. Your engine is different so im guessing your chassis code and ECU is different aswell.

I cant really help with your car but im sure if you ask people like dodo-bizar or hondanick they can help on finding what are the similarities between your engine/ECU and the EJ9 ones. Although im guessing for the OBD1 swap it would very similar to the EJ9, and the parts i mentioned above.
